This style continued the William and Mary furniture style. French cabinet maker Andre-Charles Boulle influenced the style considerably. George Hepplewhite, cabinet maker, was one of three biggest furniture makers in England in the 18th century. He gave his name to light and elegant furniture which was fashionable between 1775 and 1800. Main feature of his chairs is a shield-shaped chair back. Also, satinwood and walnut were often used in his furniture. This is an open-arm chair which is usually carved with a relief ornament and has an exposed wooden frame. The seat, arms and the seat back are usually upholstered. Fauteuil appeared in the early 18th century and considered one of the most popular styles of French antique chairs. Lambert Hitchcock, an American furniture manufacturer, was famous for designing and mass-producing the Hitchcock chair in the 19th century. These chairs usually have black, brownish black or dark green colors. Hitchcock chair was based on a Sheraton style and can be recognized by characteristic rectilinear silhouette, round legs and Neoclassical motifs.
