Does The Internet Damage The Antiques And Art Trade?

I should confess that this is a little bit of a loaded question, especially as I have an interest, but one that does deserve some discussion. Whilst attending a few antiques and fine art fairs here in the UK over the last year or so, the mood amongst many of the dealers has been quite downbeat. It seems that the general opinion is that a whole tier of previous clients has diminished or in some cases vanished. The reason cited for this? The internet. More specifically, the way in which we all use the internet. There is no doubt that the rise in our awareness and use of the internet as a resource, and frankly a necessity in our lives, has shifted the way we think about shopping, banking, holidays and spending our disposable income. The same can be said for the way that the art and antiques market is also evolving. I think long gone are the days where you could retire, set up shop in a provincial town or village and expect to while away your golden years passively selling curios and antiques - even if just for a hobby. Aside from the whole hoop-la with taxes, renting premises etc, the business has become very cut-throat. I'm not talking here amongst dealers, as most all get on with each other and are a nice bunch, but when it comes to commerce and getting a deal done there are emerging factors that are seriously impacting on sales margins and the viability of a physical store. Preparing for a show Behind the scenes at an International Art FairSo what specifically is the problem? Well, from a dealer's perspective there used to be two key markets that he/she would operate in. Retail and wholesale. Traditionally the latter would be auctions, purchases from private clients etc. The former would be all the front of house stuff e.g. a shop or the dealer's client 'wants'. The dealer would carry the investment risk, research the item's authenticity and make it presentable for sale. This was reflected in the retail profit margin which would be anywhere from 20-50%. The client would purchase the item, happily knowing that it came with pedigree and authenticity. After all the dealer's reputation was invested in it. Fair enough. What has happened now, with a general tightening of belts, is that clients are now coming to dealers and saying, 'I saw something like this for sale on the internet last week at a third below your asking price, would you take less'. Yup that's the power of the internet. Never mind all the expenses the dealer has to carry, never mind the years of expertise in their field or the fact that they also take an investment risk by buying an item in - no, the bottom line is that the client has seen a similar 'something' privately advertised at a lower price and why should they pay more? And that is a very fair and convincing point. Why pay more? It's not the dealer's fault or the client's fault. It is human nature. A very welcoming French dealer I have found that some dealers resent the internet, that somehow it has demystified a trade that should be exclusively their domain. (In some sectors of commerce that is known as a price fixing or a monopoly!). The fact is, where there was once an advantage of knowledge, now there is free access to resources that allow any buyer or seller to make informed choices. I wholeheartedly applaud that, because as dealers we also use the internet to research our items, make discoveries and build value into a piece. So we can't have it both ways really. As more and more of our clients buy online or via auction, this wholesale market has shrunk, and with it, a section of customers who now prefer to buy independently. Traditionally auction houses have published their sales records, which you could obtain by buying the back catalogue of the sale. Nowadays, for a small subscription fee or even for free, you can access worldwide sales records going back thirty years or more. This is great for dealers in one way, but in another, bearing in mind that it is a high turnover business (or should be), anyone can check up on the price of an item, e.g. a picture for sale in a gallery and compare that with what the dealer paid for it in auction a year ago. Herein lies the problem. I'm struggling to think of a business where we have access to the cost price of an item when it is also listed for sale in the retail market. To provide a crude analogy, if you ate in a restaurant and on the menu you could see the actual cost of the ingredients for the meal versus what you were being charged, you may think twice about ordering. The same is true with this paradox. We need market intelligence to inform us as dealers, but in a way that protects the integrity of the business and allows for added value via our professional knowledge and service. So what is the answer? Well I don't have all the solutions by any means, but I believe that the internet will be the major market and driving force in our business in the years to come. We've barely tapped its potential and where we are at now will probably be multiplied seven to ten times over. As this change happens, and we as dealers understand that we need to raise our game and have a significant presence in this new market platform, we'll find that our old client base will start to drift back to us again; simply because they'll feel more comfortable buying from a reputable dealer and especially if they have made a few purchase errors in the past. As professional dealers, we must embrace this market fully, we must contribute to it, we must understand how it works and drill down through all the many complex layers of e-commerce. True, there will be a period when margins are down (we're sitting in that lull right now!) and its not going to be like the old days anymore, but like antiques, age and provenance is the key. Be in business, adapt in business and know your business. I guess we couldn't go too far wrong with that mantra. Buddhist Antiquities of Nubra Valley, Handloom and Handicrafts of Gujarat?

Buddhist antiquities of Nubra Valley

Lying under the shadow of gigantic snow peaks, with lush green fields, Nubra captivates visitors with its marvelous scenic beauty. It is the largest subdivision of Ladakh - a region in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Called the "land of high passes" and located in the Great Himalayas, the Ladakh region, in the past, gained importance from its strategic location at the crossroads of important trade routes. It played a critical role not only in maintaining the trade contacts with the Chinese and Central Asian countries, but also in the spread of Buddhism in Central Asia through this route. Historically, not much is known about ancient Nubra. Its recoded history, however, starts from the period of King Bundle (1400-1440 CE). It was during his time, when Lama Shesrab Zangpo, (a disciple of Acharya Tsong Khapa), is believed to have started regular monastic establishments and the tradition of making Du-khang and temples dedicated to various Buddhist deities. The tradition of building monasteries continued till recent times. ISBN 9788188934898

Surveying all the Nubra Valley's monasteries, palaces and stupas: both surviving and in ruins, Professor Agrawal offers a meticulously detailed study of the Buddhist antiquities in this remote, hitherto archaeologically unexplored region of the Indian subcontinent. Highlighting, besides these earliest structural remains, several rock-carved figures of Vajrapani and Maitreya, accompanied by miniature carvings of stupas and other figures, the author shows how Buddhism had a firm footing in the Nubra Valley and was in the process of spreading. Together with abundant visuals, his book also seeks to examine the architectural niceties of Nubra's structures. And, additionally, tries to study, identify and date the historical objects housed in these structures. The book also includes an extensive inventory of the antiquarian remains.

Handloom and handicrafts of Gujarat

Here is a delightful, at once comprehensive view of the handloom and handicrafts of Gujarat- a major western Indian state. Once a vital part of the Indus Valley civilization, Gujarat today is home to 289 communities that follow different faiths, customs, and traditions. Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, Muslims, Parsis, Christians, and their sub-sects, along with pastoral and nomadic tribes, have coexisted here for centuries. Yet each community preserves its identity in this multicultural environment - the self-identity that is magnificently manifest in the region's craft traditions, folklore and festivals. Surprisingly perhaps, many of the Gujarati craft traditions that survive today are traceable in the ancient Indus Valley civilization. ISBN 9788189995713

The story of Gujarat is one of amalgamation and continuity of human potential, seen in the glorious karigari (craftsmanship) in the state. The karigars/artisans of the state have for centuries produced exquisite objects of daily and ceremonial uses. Using locally available materials, they have imaginatively applied ingenious skills and techniques. Every natural resource - clay, wood, stone, metal, cotton yarn, animal hide, and variety of flora - has been adopted and fashioned, in an array of designs. What we resultantly have is a fascinating balance between nature and humans, between form and function!

Acclaimed worldwide, the crafts of Gujarat are an excellent blend of beauty and design. Together with a profusion of exquisite photographs, the book not only presents an exhaustive range of Gujarat's crafts: both traditional and modern, but also highlights the unique techniques and tools that its craftspersons use, while making them. The book also catalogues several significant changes that traditional practices have undergone - underscoring changes that are now transferred to create contemporary products.

The book comes from the Gujarat State Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited - an undertaking of the Government of Gujarat.

How to Identify Real Chinese Porcelain

Chinese porcelain is among the finest and most beautiful porcelain in the world. And if it's real it could also be worth hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. But with its popularity among collectors and its high value, Chinese porcelain is often counterfeited. So how do you know that the vase in your dinning room is real? Here I will try to show you how you can identify if your porcelain is real or not.

Over time the potters started putting certain marks on their products, which served as a sort of a fingerprint. And these marks are actually the first thing that could authenticate whether your porcelain is real or fake. However, there is a special way in which most marks are read, so you must be familiar with that in advance. In most cases the marks are read from top to bottom and from right to left.

The problem with the marks is that there are over 1,500 of them, so you should read plenty of books to know them all. Usually there should be one to three columns of marks. But if you have a piece of porcelain with just one column most probably its fake. The reason is that this is a trademark of the Ming period and it is very, very unlikely that you have bought a Ming porcelain.

Also, consider the colour of the marks. They would either be blue or red. The red marks were usually used for pieces from the mid-19th century, while the blue ones are slightly older. Moreover, if your vase or plate has the famous "Made in China" stamp at the bottom, then it's definitely not authentic. This doesn't mean that the piece is fake, but it might just be a cheaper version of a real piece. As a matter of fact if there are any Western characters, that means that the porcelain was made after the 1890s and most probably even after the 1950s.

Finally, remember that it's not that easy to actually distinguish a real porcelain from a fake one. You will need some time to become familiar with all types of marks and the different documented pieces of real Chinese porcelain. One thing is for sure, though, if you do find a real piece in your collection, then you are a lucky person.

Martin Davids Photo The Chinese porcelain was made exclusively to be exported in Europe and North America between 16th and 20th century, which led to an economic boom in China . If you want to make sure you have a real piece, read the rest of the article.

I've Just Found Out Where All The Antiques Buyers Have Gone...

Ok, maybe it's too sensational a statement for the title of a brief article like this, and I suppose I should call it something like, Market forces in the Fine Art and Antiques Sector: A critical path analysis. That sounds a bit dry though. Regardless, I need to back up a little and explore some of the background to what provoked me to put pen to paper.

Over the last three years, I've noticed a significant drop off in trade in the antiques and art market. I concede that there may be all sorts of facts and figures to contradict this, but I'm only imparting this from my own frontline experience of exhibiting at regional and international fairs, extensive buying trips in Europe and my bank balance!

Everywhere you turn it seems the trade is bemoaning depressed prices or lack of footfall at galleries, shops and antique fairs. True, there will be exceptions to this and many dealers are doing extremely well, thank you very much.

For the vast majority, these times are a slog and it seems everyone is trying to pass the buck. Landlords are finding it tough so they put up the rents of the shops and galleries they lease out; exhibition fair organisers find it tough because venue hire and insurance has gone through the roof and so they put their prices up - and lets not get started on the cost of advertising and general business expenses. So this all filters down to us, the dealer. We are buying higher than ever before and struggle to even achieve a modest margin.

Where in the past we could just turn something over for a quick, but low, profit in the trade, right now it seems we are all paying full market price amongst each other. The traditional equity gap between a wholesale (trade) price and retail has been seriously dented, leaving even less of a profit to transact B2B deals.

Compounding all of this, in some antique disciplines, the prices seem to have been heavily influenced (almost fixed) by all the various forms of online market intelligence, whether that be eBay, forums or sale room results etc. At the click of a button our old clients can compare prices and know exactly what the 'value' of something they intend to acquire is, on the open market. I should state that I think that this is a healthy thing overall, but invariably this is a tool that is sometimes used against the dealer to extract the lowest price; that does not take into account their professionalism, knowledge or provenance of the piece.

It's an all too familiar story with high street retailers in other business sectors. Be honest, how many of you have gone into a store to buy something and then ordered it later online when you could see you were getting a better deal? I know I have. Well, this is the same thing. It's human nature I guess. It's not going away and it's something we are going to have to get used to.

Now I know at this point you may be experiencing hot tears of confusion running down your cheeks. After all, this article only skims the surface and I'm almost halfway through already; I need to get to the point and I don't want to further compound matters by heaping on more doom and gloom.

But I'm going to, so please indulge me for a bit longer.

Many of us carry stock that is over a year old. In a lot of cases the depressed prices mean that our margins have been severely compromised, if not wiped out. So we have two choices. Hold fast and wait for the market to recover, which means our stock stagnates and we get bored of looking at it (ergo not that enthusiastic anymore), or move it on - sell at cost price or a loss to inject some fresh money back into the business. It's not a happy prospect but one I increasingly find to be commonplace and one that seems to be attracting new clients.

Speaking of which...

The buyers. The lifeblood of our business, our livelihood, whatever you want to call them; our so called client base has dwindled and in some cases disappeared altogether. Where are they and why have they deserted us, you ask?

Now I need to put a disclaimer in here, that what follows is a very broad generalisation of what I think has happened. Please don't get your expectations up though, as my insights are more common business sense than any kind of secret known only to a few.

There will always be a market for all things, but the fact is (and it doesn't take a genius to work this out) the profile of our buyers have changed. Ten to fifteen years ago a typical client, let's call him Mr Charlie Farnsbarns, reached retirement age, had a bit of cash to spend and so went out buying all those beautiful antique things he grew up with, coveted, but could never afford. For us that was great. Business was booming and I'm sure we all had our own Mr Farnsbarns to keep us going.

Anyway, as Mr Farnsbarns grew older, he decided to downsize until eventually, he was no longer interested in buying anymore, but more interested in selling. So many of us (myself included) bought up or bought back his cherished possessions to resell. After all why wouldn't we, we did well the first time around. Right?

But there was an unforeseen problem looming with that strategy. Mr Farnsbarns and his kind were out of the game and we had unwittingly entered a market that was fast becoming saturated and crucially, with a demand curve that was also about to take a nose dive. (It didn't help that globally the financial climate was also a little bit unsure of itself).

You see the fact was, Charlie Farnsbarns Jr was running the show now. He hated all that old stuff his father owned. There were no cultural reference or association with it for him. His childhood was spent being influenced by other eras and fashions.

That's what he and his kind want to recapture. They are of a different generation now, associating with things that remind them of their own youth, not the youth of their great grandfathers. They are also more commercially aggressive, buying wholesale where they can - after all, they have the luxury of choice and a worldwide market that was never afforded to poor old Mr Farnsbarns Snr.

There is another important factor at work here. The way the world now sees our business. Growing up, I often heard the mantra (like some kind of secret unwritten rule) that you couldn't go too far wrong investing in antiques and art. Many people did this and still do, of course. Even organised crime got in on the act; getting a bit of culture as they laundered their grubby profits through artworks and antiquities.

The difference now though, is that our beautiful business is all grown up too. Where in the past we dabbled, bought or inherited marvellous things, nowadays Art & Antiques are officially an investment asset class, with specialist fund managers tracking performance and acquisitions. We are big business.

So where does that leave all of us? Why is it we are still in this dip... and can we recover?

Undoubtedly yes. It's all going to be OK.

I don't know all the answers by any means, but I have noticed a few things working. For those who hold a general stock, it's a case of doing something different. Looking at reinvigorating and mixing it up a bit. Selling more online. Trying different era's, different disciplines. It may mean finding your feet with it and to some degree a bit of trial and error, but its still worth remembering the adage, 'go where the dogs feed'. The point is that you've got to keep moving, and don't remain a sitting target.

For those specialist dealers, there is comfort in the fact that the market will always be there for the collector or specialist buyer. It's probably harder at the moment to foster old clients and attract the new, but if you can offload your slow items, cap your inventory re-investment and exposure with all but the best pieces, you should be able to ride out the downturn.

I honestly don't mean to sound patronising here, as the reality is we are all dealers at heart and have the skill to turn our hand to most things, but sometimes with financial pressures mounting, it is all to easy to not be able to see the wood from the trees and feel isolated.

I suppose, the heart of the message I am driving at here is you are not alone, but at the same time, you can't expect to keep doing the same thing and get different results. We must adapt and change our business approach, maybe even our entire model, to where the market sits.

And so to sum up and answer the statement posed in the title of this article;

Where are the buyers...?

Well, I can see them. They are right here. In fact they are looking for US....fresher faced than before, hungrier to deal than before, more informed than before, motivated and with wallets bulging.

The first three quarters of the fiscal year 2012-13 saw India exporting handcrafts worth $2.05 billion across the world - a 20 percent jump in comparison with the same period of the previous fiscal.

Indian handiworks exports have set a $3.3 billion as the target for 2012-13, and are all set to meet this target. While U.S. and Europe constitute the lion's share of international consumers, accounting for 60 percent of the demand, in recent times, the handicrafts are seeing a lot of demand coming from emerging markets like China, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East as well.

Challenge Coins The Memorial Day

It is human behavior that they remember their most important days of life. They will never forget them. These events include both cheer able events and sad events too. Memorial day challenge coins are great way to express your emotions associated with a specific occasion. Shortest words eltitles on these coins describe big stories in the shortest possible method.

In the entire world today, challenge coinages are given as mainly the symbol of courage, bravery, sincerity and unity. These coins are used on many occasions. In fact, the use of challenge coins is increasing. Everybody is including them into their personal life. Organizations are using them for a number of purposes. Even, churches, NGOs, educational organizations use them to make their important days memorable. Challenge coins are great way to mark a day as memorable.

In today's coin producing industry, people create coins for every memorable day. These coins remind of the special occasion that marked history. People celebrate those days with great enthusiasm. Those days include happy to sad events because the both kinds of days are associated with human life.

Many coin producing companies create the coins for special occasions in advance so that people don't have to wait and they can pick the coins at any time. These coins are not expensive item. One coin costs from $4 to $15 or so. That's why the use of challenge coins is ever increasing. It hasn't reduced. First they were used in military as a Military Challenge Coins. Gradually they came out from military and government used them for their organizations. Private sectors then realized their importance and used them for various purposes.

Another factor that makes the coins important is the huge variety and diversity which we can put in the coin. Already the internet is crowded with coin producing companies. Each company has its thousands of designs to choose from. Even then, if you want to produce your style of coin, you can either do it yourself or ask an expert already working with the coin manufacturing organizations. Though, the process of designing a coin is not that easy. This requires special techniques. Special skilled people work with such organizations for designing according to the ideas of their customers.

The design process is very interesting too. The experts design them which look like animation. Each and every line in the design is hard drawn on the paper with a blue pen. Then the final design is sent for approval. If the customer agrees to the design, the production processing starts. Otherwise, the revisions of design go on.

Whatever the design, colors, element a challenge coin has, they are always the sign of reminding of important events. People buy them and wear them on special days. Organizations buy special coinages for their employees to wear. This serves two purposes. One is that they celebrate the event and other is that they also get a chance to promote themselves. One Memorial Day coin may also include a company's details. This describes that specific organization is celebrating a special event.

There are many designs and shapes available for these coinages. People usually know the details of their special occasions so they like to produce unique coins for their specialoccasions. However, famous events have got advantage of being global. Their coins are automatically produced worldwide.

Memorial Day challenge coinages are long lasting items. They last for years easily. With a little more care, you can keep them for lifetime. The coming generations will see the coins. The coins will serve as a great tool to know about the past and emotions associated with them.

The Design of Furniture Tables in the Tudor Period 1500-1650 Part 2

Dining tables were massive and thick set, the baluster or bulbous legs being held by solid stretchers which served as foot rests. The frieze is often carved, or more rarely, as in the draw-top table in the Victoria and Albert Museum, inlaid; while sometimes the frieze is carved on the front only, the sides being left plain. In late sixteenth-century stretchers there is a projection on the top surface making it T-shaped in section, a type which gives place to a rectangular section in the early seventeenth century. The table leg shows the fullest development of the bulbous support. Developing from the knop, the large bulbous form was established in the late years of the sixteenth century and existed for almost a century, for an oak table in the possession of Mr. Frank Green, dated 1668, has this bulbous gadrooned leg. An unusual variant is the dropped bulb.

The columnar leg appears in the last decade of the sixteenth century, and is especially characteristic of the early seventeenth century. In some examples, as in the oak table in St Michael's Church, St Albans, the leg has a quasi-classical capital. Baluster legs, turned and ringed, replaced the bulbous leg in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. An elongated peg-top support, usually left plain and decorated with rings, was borrowed from Holland in the late seventeenth century.

Small tables for use in parlors varied in the shape of the top, which was oval, round, or octagonal. Closely similar are the octagonal table, dated 1606, in the possession of the Carpenters' Company, and Elias Ashmole's table at Oxford. In both the slender bulbous legs are fluted, and the arcading is notched; while in the Carpenters' Company's table there is a moulded surrounding and plain cross stretcher. Folding or flap tables, in which the flap is supported by a swinging leg, were light in make, and often set against the wall until required. Such tables appear in the manuscript inventory taken in 1569 of goods at Tannis, in Hertfordshire, and in that of household stuff at Howard House in 1598.

Oval and round tables were much used in the seventeenth century. Falstaff is circumstantially described by Mistress Quickly as "sitting in my Dolphin chamber, at the round table." Chair tables with tip-up tops were made as early as 1558, in which year a "round chair table" in the parlor is bequeathed by Andrew Cranewise of Bury, in his will, printed by the Camden Society.

A table chair-one of the two brought from Canterbury by Archbishop Sancroft on his expulsion from the sea in 1615-stands in Redenhall Church, Norfolk.

Table tops were frequently covered with a "carpet" or "cloth" of Turkey work, coloured leather, or other materials. The great oval table with folding sides in the "Great Rooms or Hall next the Banketing House" had its cover of red leather bordered with blue gilt leather, cut to fit it, as are the table covers depicted by Abraham Bosse, where the cloth, which hangs almost to the ground, is tied or buttoned at the corners.

The History Behind The Bold Buffalo Nickle

Released to the public in 1913, The Indian Head, or Buffalo nickel, exhibited distinct features of a Native American chief on one side and an American bison (buffalo) on the reverse side. A groundbreaking ceremony for an American Indian memorial presided over by President Taft on Staten Island also accompanied the initial distribution of the coin. Most of the 40 coins supplied by the Denver, San Fransisco and Philadelphia mints on that day were given to several Native American chiefs in attendance. Unfortunately, the memorial was never established but the buffalo nickle continued to be circulated until production of the coin ceased in 1938.

Who was the Indian on the Nickel?

James Fraser, American sculptor and designer of the buffalo nickle, claimed the portrait of the Native American was a composite of Two Moons, a Cheyenne Chief; Iron Tail, a Lakota chief; and Kiowa Chief Big Tree, three American Indians he thought possessed features of the "ideal" Native American. However, the true identity of the iconic Indian profile remains a little uncertain due to the inconsistent stories Fraser often told concerning this legendary portrait.

Black Diamond, the Buffalo

Fraser stated that he based the likeness of the buffalo on a bison named Black Diamond that lived in New York City's Central Park zoo. Interestingly, one variety of the Buffalo nickel series emerged as the famous 1937-D "three-legged buffalo" nickel, which featured Black Diamond with three legs instead of four. A Denver mint pressman, trying to eliminate marks caused by dies touching each other, inadvertently weakened or removed one of Black Diamond's legs. Denver mint inspectors failed to discover the error before thousands of buffalo nickels had already been created containing this error.

Historical Trivia about the Buffalo Nickel

*Design flaws involving raised areas on the nickel caused parts of the nickel to wear away quickly, especially dates and the words "FIVE CENTS".

*Critics of the coin asserted that its rough surface would allow counterfeiters to easily manufacture fake five-cent pieces.

*During a short-lived recession in 1922, no new buffalo nickels were minted

*John Big Tree capitalized on claiming to be the original model for the buffalo nickle until he died in 1967. Although he was 92, he commonly told people he was well over 100 years old

*The head of Black Diamond (killed for his meat in 1915), continues to be exhibited at a few coin conventions today. In addition, Fraser is quoted as saying that Black Diamond was the "contrariest animal" at the zoo and that the animal would not allow him side views for sketch purposes

*Composition of the buffalo nickle was 25 percent nickel and 75 percent copper

In 1938, the buffalo nickle was replaced by the Jefferson nickel, which remains in circulation today.

Chen Yifei's Landscape Paintings

In Chinese art circle, whenever people mention the name of the artist, Chen Yifei, the image of the watery region in South will spring to mind immediately. Chen's works including Ancient Bridge (1983), Where I played as a Child (1984), The Quiet Canal (1985), depict the eye-catching scenery of the south of Yangtze River.

Looking at these landscape paintings, we can feel the deepest tranquility which is fascinating and intoxicating. Under this otherworldly silence, an atmosphere of exoticism and eastern mysticism will arise spontaneously. Based on westerners' imagination, understanding and demand of the East, the watery region in South in Chen's paintings is subjective and romanticized. This is the typical feature of Orientalism, which allows western people to have a look at the ancient, mysterious and peaceful eastern world. It is an eastern world that is completely different from the West and that westerners are able to comprehend and imagine.

The Jiangnan landscape in Chen's paintings shows viewers a solemn spirituality, without any feminine delicacy. Through acutely dealing with light, this incredible spirituality is expressed exquisitely. Chen Yifei absorbed Rembrandt's technique in dealing with light. In his paintings, he used sophisticated skills of frosting and delicate strokes to unfold early morning hours in late autumn. The dim light of the morning sun breaks through thin mist and becomes complicate and vague. Early morning is the most silent moment in a day. The Quiet Canal shows the tranquility of the watery region, in contrast to busy and bustle scene --- small wooden boats are shuttling in the canal. The scenery is evocative and beautiful. On either side of the canal lie hovels, built of mud bricks, which set this long canal off beautifully. The artist tried to reduce complexity into simplicity. Scattered hovels with black tiles and white walls form rhythmically horizontal, vertical and oblique lines, which present aesthetic feeling of lines. There are two trees beside the boat. One of them lost all leaves, leaving only branches bare, which shows romantic scene of late autumn. However, there are several red leaves on the other tree. Arc-shaped branches add a sense of motion to the whole scene. Combining soft lines with dark color brings viewers impressive visual effect. Furthermore, it touches people's heart, refreshes people's mind and enchant people in tranquility.

Spruce UpYour House with Antiques

Decorating the place we live in is a common human behaviour. I agree we don't spend too much on interior decoration in a rented house, but we do make efforts to give the place a personal touch, so as make it homely and welcoming. However, if we own the house, the interior decoration becomes an ever going process. We keep on decorating our houses in a slow but steady process. My question here is what is it which will differentiate your house from others? Of course, the way you design it, but don't you think using different items for your interior decoration would add on to thedistinctiveness? In this era of modernization, where everything has a technologically advanced side to it, you can opt for antiques. They will be a perfect getaway from the much hyped modern decor everyone is crazy about. Here is a list of a few antique things you can think of keeping.

A dining table

No house can do without a dining table. These modern designed and spacious tables have become a necessity. However, you can choose an antique dining table for a change;it will be a good deviation from the modern designs. The only thing you need to take care of is the paint of the dining table, it may look old, give it a fresh coat of paint and you are sorted.

A chandelier

Everybody does not like to invest in a chandelier. This gives you the perfect chance to make a difference. Get an antique chandelier which would give your house the soft, warm lighting you would love to have in the evenings. However, do not go for too huge chandeliers as they will steal the show and people would not notice the other minute things around your house. Pick up a medium size with minimal design; it will be a simple yet classy addition.

A mirror

Mirrors strike a beautiful balance between decoration and utility. Find a big mirror with wooden detailing and place it above a chest. It will serve as a dresser and will fill your house with the antique elegance as well. You can also add a couple of lamps on top of the chest to complete the look of the dresser.

A painting

Nothing gives the feeling of antiquity more than a big wall painting. You can either have one big painting or have a set of three medium sized paintings to decorate your wall. Either way your wall will have creativity people would be lost in. Isn't it a great idea to keep people busy thinking?

Built-in shelves

Apart from the above mentioned major items, you can fill your house with the smaller antiques too. However, you would have to decide whether you want them scattered all over the house or gathered in one place for a greater effect. If you want to keep them all at one place, then a built-in shelf would be the best way to display your antique collection. Find a wall huge enough to accommodate all your small antiques, and get a built-in shelf built there and stuff it with antique photo frames, vases, candle holders, figurines and artwork.

Your house would be more like a fortress, hiding all the valuable things within it. With these antiques around your work on your interior decoration would be considerably lessened.

People have suddenly started to fill their houses with Antiques & Collectables . Visit our website if you too want to grab some of these for your house.

The Best Markets in India For Purchasing Handicrafts

So you have decided to invest in some quality Indian handicrafts, either for doing up your own home or for giving as gifts to your friends and family. Although the Indian handicrafts market is massive in size, it is hard to find the right place to pick up such items from.

You can't just buy them from any random store in the market - you need to know for sure that the piece you purchase is a genuine handicraft and not some cheap knock-off lookalike. Also, handicrafts don't come cheap - but if you know the right stores, you can get a good bargain for the products you purchase along with a quality assurance that your products are genuine.

Here are 5 of the best markets in India where you can safely shop for handicrafts:

Dilli Haat, Delhi

If you are in Delhi, then you are undoubtedly spoilt for choice when it comes to searching for handicrafts. One of the most popular markets for handicrafts, Dilli Haat was set up by the New Delhi Municipal Corporation and the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Department. This haat attracts customers not just from around the city, but also around the country and even the world.

With multiple stalls from various parts of the country all located within the premises, the Dilli Haat offers a wide range of handicrafts products and choices. You can pick up a Kashmiri Pashmina shawl here or woodcraft from South India, all in the same place. However, do make sure to brush up your bargaining skills before going shopping.

Central Cottage Industries Emporium

The Central Cottage Industries Emporium or CCIE is located in various places across the major metros of the country. It started in 1952 with the aim to bring the best of Indian handicrafts directly from skilled artisans from all around the country to the consumers.

All handicrafts at CCIE are authentic and it offers artisans direct access to the market. You can find handicrafts from across the country under one roof, and even though you can't bargain your way to a great deal, you will not have to worry about the quality of the products you pick up here.

Padmabazaar.com

If you are unable to travel across the country and would like to buy Indian handicrafts online from the comfort of your home, then Padmabazaar is the perfect online shopping portal for you. The website offers a wide range of cultural handicrafts sourced from all over India with 100 percent guarantee on quality at the most competitive prices.

And of course, it comes with the added bonus of the comfort element - no more spending hours scouring the streets of unknown markets in search of the perfect handicraft gift for the next occasion you need to attend or even to do up your own home. Just log on to padmabazaar.com and browse through the extensive collection of products to make your next handicrafts' purchase.

State Emporia Complex, Delhi

Located on Baba Kharak Singh Marg near Connaught Place in New Delhi, this building houses various states' emporia. Each emporium has its own widespread range of handicrafts from its respective state. And you can take the time to window shop through multiple shops before finding yourself the right kind of handicraft item that suits you.

Visit the Bihar emporium for Madhubani paintings, or the Rajasthan emporium for printed fabrics, or sample genuine Darjeeling tea at the West Bengal emporium. There's something for everyone at this complex - right from the most affordable to the pricier kinds of handicrafts.

Kala Madhyam, Bengaluru

Like CCIE, Kala Madhyam too has direct association with the artisans whose products are for sale at this store. You can find handicrafts from all over the country here. While the wall murals are among the most popular buys at Kala Madhyam, you can also get a variety of metal ware, woodcrafts, pottery, jewelry and paintings.

Maintaining Your Beautiful Fort Lauderdale Landscaping

Every person in South Florida wants to have the best of the best. People go to the gym in order to stay in shape. They drive the nicest cars, and live in the nicest homes. South Florida is where people come to see and be seen, to live the glamorous life. One of the best ways to show off a home in South Florida is for it to have great curb appeal. And nothing says curb appeal like having a well landscaped home in Miami or Fort Lauderdale.

Miami and Fort Lauderdale are the perfect places to have a well-manicured lawn and landscape. The Florida sun shines down on our precious lawns year round, allowing the most beautiful varieties of plants, trees, and vegetables to grow. Northerners are jealous when they come to South Florida and see their potted plant as a full grown bush here! That is because plants love to grow under the rich Florida sun. Having a well maintained landscape in Miami is not a luxury, it's a necessity. Any person who does not maintain their property is likely to be the bane of the neighborhood, and have their neighbors look at them sideways. Everyone here knows that landscaping is not a choice. Landscapes have to be maintained or the same sun which provides such possibilities will quickly overrun a property with unsightly growth.

Everyone has seen a home or two in Miami or Fort Lauderdale that did not keep up with its landscaping. The Banyan trees alone can quickly overcome a property that is not well maintained. These uncared-for properties are easy to spot because they have plants and trees growing everywhere. The owners are either too busy, too lazy, or unequipped to handle the constant vegetative growth. So, they give up. The plants are right at home. They quickly take over a property. Once the plants have taken the property over, it is almost impossible for the owner to do anything about it.

Properties which have overgrown plants, or are otherwise unmaintained, are a real eyesore. It is for this reason that many Miami and Fort Lauderdale property owners choose professional landscaping services. Cutting, pruning, and sculpting lawns and plants is only a hobby for the very few. Other people do it because they feel that it is too expensive to hire a landscaping company, or they think that they can handle it themselves. But, after a few dirty looks from the neighbors, they realize that this is exactly what professionals are for, to do the things that a person can't, or doesn't want to do themselves.

For many people, hiring a landscaping company in Miami or Fort Lauderdale seems like an unnecessary expense. But, it is anything but an unnecessary expense. Living in South Florida has plenty of benefits, and being able to have a great lawn and landscape is one of them. But, this unforgiving climate is not for do-it-yourselfers. When it comes to landscaping in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, it is best to let the pros handle it.

Think Outside The Box - Christmas Gifts

It's time for Christmas and the enchanting moments of gift giving. This is the time when we desire to add a little fancy and sparkle to our wardrobe. Also it's an enthralling idea to present the loving ones with self made gifts. Many of us would have already set to go with the feeling for Christmas ambiance, especially those with many friends.

In this internet era it's a no wonder that we can encounter many fun and unique ideas to craft a Christmas gift. From crochet to beading, we can spot everything online. This is the correct moment to let our creativity and innovation explore the world of art. Also you needn't require any special skill or extravagant time to create these jewelry gifts. All you'll require is a small amount of time and some left behind fabrics or cans.

If you find time to craft your own handmade jewelry gift for this Christmas, here is an easy method to make Christmas star ornament. This is an easy-to-do project, since the ornament is made out of paper beads which we can carve ourselves from scratch. The only requisites will be ten colorful paper beads and craft wire.

To start with the task cut the craft wires into five pieces, so that each piece can accommodate two paper beads leaving some extra space behind. Now string two paper beads to each piece of the craft wire. Construct a knot in between the paper beads by bending the wire to make a loop. This fastens the paper beads separately at their places and prevents them from moving.

Now we are all set to create the out-of-the-ordinary Christmas star. Lay all the five strings of paper beads in a crisscross manner, so that they form a star. Now bind the beaded craft wires as such using a small wire. To seal the center of the star and to add prettiness, just attach a small button to the center. This makes the star look even more attractive.

Yes, your unusual star paper bead ornament is ready. Isn't it a truly unique Christmas gift?! Sit back, relax and use your creativity to craft amazing Christmas jewelry gifts.
